John Hudson and Mary Ann Cox were married at St Andrew’s Church, Twyford, in a double wedding ceremony with Mary’s sister Edith Ellen and George Ernest West.
This photograph was taken outside Smithy Farm, home of the Coxes, on 19th October 1904.

The family moved to Smalley around 1910 and after living in a cottage opposite Smalley Hall for one or two years, they moved to The Beeches at Smalley Green.

John and Mary’s first child was Gertrude Mary. Known as ‘Gertie’, she was born in 1905.

Gertie married Ben Limer at St John the Baptist’s Church, Smalley, in December 1934.

The fourth child and first son of John and Mary, John, known as ‘Jack’, was born in 1908.
Jack is shown here with his father John circa 1928.
Jack married Lilian Rose Jarvis at St John the Baptist’s Church, Smalley, in March 1939.

Before the Second World War, Arthur and his brother William bought a lorry and began a business together. ‘Hudson Bros. Smalley’ can be seen on the door in this photograph from cira 1935.
Arthur married Lily Georgina Mosley at St John the Baptist’s Church, Edlington, Yorkshire, in 1939.

Harry Rodgers (1917-1944) joined the Royal Air Forece Volunteer Reserve. He died on 13 December 1944 during an explosion at an ammunition warehouse, and is remembered on the Heliopolis War Memorial in Egypt. He was 27 years old.
Bill married ‘Bessie’ Beardsley Bowmer at St John the Baptist’s Church in March 1940.
Bill enlisted with the RAF in July 1940 and served as a cook during the Second World War.
Bill’s brother Arthur served in the Royal Army Service Corps.
Bill and Arthur were both in India in 1942 but neither of them knew this until they met by chance in Calcutta.
Bill and his family lived at Field View Cottage from 1963 to 1976.
