After working on the Clarendon Estate near Shepshed, John became a gamekeeper for the Calke Abbey Estate around 1845. After living at various properties on the estate, the family moved to Twyford in 1860.

Born in Diseworth, Leicestershire, Caroline married John Hudson in 1842.
The second child of John and Caroline Hudson, Mary married Robert Cronshaw at Twyford in 1865.
Caroline was John and Caroline's third child. In 1868 she married Richard Wain who became the ‘School Master’ at Tissington School. Caroline taught sewing at the school in the 1890’s.

The fourth child of John and Caroline Hudson, Hannah worked as a housemaid at Calke Abbey after leaving school.
After a short-time working as a cook in Clitheroe, Hannah moved to the Vicarage at Alstonfield in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, where she became the nursery maid for the Vicar William Henry Purchas.
Hannah is in the back row, second from the left. The Reverend William Henry Purchas is on the left in the front row.
The sixth child of John and Caroline Hudson, Elizabeth worked as a kitchen maid and later as a dressmaker.
Elizabeth never married and lived at Twyford all of her adult life.
Emma was the eighth child of John and Caroline Hudson.
Emma married John Birnie in 1879.

William was the tenth child of John and Caroline Hudson.
William worked as a bricklayer before emigrating to Australia in 1886 with his brother Charlie. However, William returned to England in 1897.
Arthur was the eleventh child of John and Caroline Hudson and, like his father, became a gamekeeper for the Harpur-Crewe’s, being responsible for the Calke Abbey Estate north of the river.
Charlie was the thirtheenth child of John and Caroline Hudson. He emigrated to Australia in 1886.
Frederick, the fourteenth and last child of John and Caroline Hudson, was born in Twyford.
After finishing school, Frederick moved to Heanor and worked as a blacksmith.
Frederick is pictured on the left. The person on the right is currently unknown.
Frederick married Lydia Agnes Mousely at Twyford in 1896.
Being close to the River Trent, the land around the cottage often flooded and Ferry House became known as Noah’s Ark. It remained the home of the Hudsons for over 60 years.
