Although a census has been taken every ten years since 1801 (except in 1941), names were not recorded until 1841. Each census collected information about the occupants of a house in the evening of the census date. Forms were given to each household a few days before the census date. The head of the household was expected to complete the form, noting the details of each person who slept at the house during the night of the census date. The forms were then collected the day after the census date. The details on these forms were then copied into enumerators' books. Unfortunately the original forms completed by the householders from 1841 to 1901 were destroyed.
The 1931 census for England and Wales was destroyed by fire in during the Second World War. Records for Scotland survive.
The 1939 Register was not a census, but did capture similar information. It was an exercise to record certain details of every member of the civilian population. Information about military personnel were not recorded.
No census was taken in 1941 due to the Second World War.
The 1951 census will be not be available until January 2052 due to the Census Act 1920 which prohibits disclosure for 100 years.
