SPORTING NOTES. ... The prize fight between Jem Smith and John Knifton for the Championship of England has again been temporarily abandoned. The principals and the majority of their backers made the journey on Monday morning through Surrey, but owing to the vigilance of the police all returned to London. The affair, it is stated, is certain to be satisfactorily decided before Christmas, but I do not believe that the “division” behind Knifton ever had such an intention. |
