MESSRS. G. HOLME AND CO.’S CRICKET CLUB.—This club, which has been in existence for several years in a small sort of way and which has taken a very rapid stride to the front during the past season, held its first annual dinner at the Victoria Hotel, Cowley street, on Friday evening. There was a capital attendance, and Mr. J. Sutton, the chairman, was supprted by Messrs. A. Dyer, R. Forman, R. E. Dowthwaite, A. Holme, A. Nicholl, J. Newton, T. Radford, P. Brunton, T. Cotterill, A. Alimundo (the energetic and popular hon. sec.).—After dinner Mr. Alimundo stated that the season had been a very much better one than was expected. Out of 20 matches played they had won nine and lost five. They had scored 908 runs as against 868, and the batting averages were headed by Mr. H. Knifton with 10.7, Mr. G. A. Holme coming second with an average of 9.5. In the bowling department Mr. Eccleshare had done best, having an average of 4.16, whilst Mr. Knifton was second with 5.12.—Mr. Dowthwaite, in proposing “Success to the Club,” said he considered that for a first season it had been a very prosperous one (Hear, hear). The members who had played in several matches had done exceedingly well, particularly Messrs. Knifton and Eccleshare (Hear, hear). He should be glad next season to present a bat for the best batting average, and a ball for the best bowling average (hear, hear), and he hoped that they would have a still more prosperous summer.—Mr. Sutton thanked Mr. Dowthwaite for his kindness, and thought the club had a bright future in store for it (Applause). During the evening the convivilality was very kindly contributed to by Messrs. Eccleshare, Dowthwaite, Alimundo, Topham, Potter, &c. |
