My Cox ancestors from the early 1800’s originate from Collingham, Nottinghamshire. They moved to Bottesford in Lincolnshire before settling in Derbyshire.
Born at Collingham, Nottinghamshire, John was a labourer at Bottesford in Leicestershire and later a bailiff for Lowes Farm at Swarkestone in Derbyshire.
Sarah was born at Treswell, Nottinghamshire, the daughter of William Rollin and his wife Susannah (née Whitaker). She was a twin with her sister Susannah, and married John Cox in 1861.
John was born at New Normanton, Derby. He initially worked on a farm near Twyford as a wagoner and labourer, before moving to Smalley and finding work as an ostler at Mapperley Colliery.
Born at Smalley, Derbyshire, Elsie was baptised at St John the Baptist’s Church on 26th March 1900. She died aged 3 and was buried in Smalley Churchyard on 3rd March 1903.
John Cox 1889-1918
John Cox was born at Melbourne, Derbyshire, in 1889. He was serving in the 17th Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment (Princes of Wales’s Own) during the First World War when he was killed in action: he was 19 years old.
Born at Smalley, Derbyshire, ‘Will’ moved to Twyford where he ran Smithy Farm after the death of his uncle John Edric Cox. He was also a Church Warden St Andrew’s Church for 58 years.
Born at Findern, Derbyshire, Evelyn was the daughter of George Hicklin and his wife Miriam (née Coy). Her older sister Lucy married John Edric Cox in 1908, and Evelyn married his nephew John William Cox in 1920.
Born at Skipton, Yorkshire, Lily was the daughter of Richard Collins and his wife Eliza (née Davies). The family moved to New Mills in Derbyshire, where Lily met and married Albert Edric Cox.
Born in March 1910, Stanley Edric Cox was baptised at St Andrew’s Church, Twyford, on 11th March. He died on 2nd March 1911 aged 11 months, and was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew’s Church on 6th March.
Born in June 1915, George Alan Cox was baptised at St Andrew’s Church, Twyford, on 25th July. He died on 31st July aged 6 weeks and was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew’s Church on 2nd August.
Born at Smalley on 11th October 1894, Charles served as a Lance Corporal in the Labour Corps during the First World War, where he sustained injuries. He married Emma Jackson on 5th January 1918 at Smalley Church.
Born at Smalley on 6th July 1896, Walter served in the Navy during the First World War. He trained as a butcher; first hawking his products from a van, before opening his own Pork Shop in Buxton, where he met Amy Timmis who worked at the neighbouring Post Office. They were married at St Margaret’s Church, Buxton, on 10th June 1929.
Born at Smalley on 8th August 1898, Reginald served as a Private in the London Regiment Labour Corps during the First World War, after which he trained as a teacher. He married Millicent Clowes on 11th August 1926 at St Matthew’s Church, Morley, in Derbyshire.
Thomas was born at Carlton-le-Moorland, Lincolnshire, and was baptised on 2nd March 1834 at St Mary’s Church. However, he died within 24 hours and was buried in the churchyard on 3rd March.
Charles Cox 1838-1838
Charles was born at Belvoir Inn Farm, Bottesford, Leicestershire. He was baptised on 7th July 1838 at St Mary’s Church but died shortly afterwards and was buried in the churchyard on 10th July.
Thomas Cox 1840-1840
Thomas was born at Bottesford, Leicestershire, towards the end of 1840. He does not appear to have been baptised, and died within 3 months. A record of his burial has not yet been found.
Charles Cox 1848-1849
Charles was born at Swarkestone, Derbyshire, on 23rd November 1848. He was baptised at St James’ Church on 31st December but died the following year aged 7. Charles was buried in St Jame’s Churchyard on 11th July 1849.
