My earliest known Hudson ancestors were John and Bridget Hudson whose son William was born at Costock, Nottinghamshire. The family moved to Sutton Bonington and William, after his marriage to Jane Harday, moved to Diseworth in Leicestershire. By 1770, their grandson William was living ten miles south in the village of Sheepshed (now Shepshed), and in the early 1800’s, William’s grandson John was working as a gamekeeper at Calke Abbey, eventually living at Twyford. John was later succeeded in the same role by his son John Hudson, who was my great-great-great-grandfather.
It is said that the Hudsons of Twyford claimed descent from the navigator Henry Hudson. However, it is not known who made this claim, and there does not appear to be any evidence to suggest that such a claim was correct.
