Jan. 7
    As Arthur Morley, Esquire, hosier of Nottingham was about to leave the platform of one of the railway stations London he was seized with apoplexy and died instantly.
Feb. 1, 2, and up to the 6th
    Very sharp cold snowy frosty weather.
Feb. 14
    Sale of household furniture, brewing utensils, etc., of Mr F. Cupit, Maltsters Arms, Common Side Belper.
Feb. 19
    A severe hurricane passed over the country.
    The well-known old yew tree near the Rose and Crown Smalley Common fell a victim to the fury of the storm on the 19 of Feb. last.
Feb. 20
    Very cold frosty weather.
Feb. 27 & 28
    Another tremendous hurricane passed over Derbyshire by which a deal of damage was done and property destroyed. The 82nd birthday of E. D. Sitwell, Esquire, was kept as usual.

    Died at Smalley Mill in the 34th year of her age Mary wife of Mr Samuel Parker frame smith.

    Very cold frosty snowy weather.

    Sale of furniture at Breadsall Priory.

    Died at Smalley Common, Eliza wife of Mr J. Brown horse breaker aged 65 years.
Mar. 31
    Mr William Booth of Smalley died aged 22 years. Cold and frosty nights with sharp piercing winds.
Apr. 5
    Heenan the great American prize-fighter arrested at Derby & bound over to keep the peace.
Apr. 9
    Mr J. Elliott was taken ill at the Jolly Colliers Horsley Woodhouse and died in a few days afterwards aged about 70 years.
Apr. 13
    Died in the 49th year of his age Mr Joseph Watson landlord of the Nags Head Inn Belper, universally respected by all who knew him.
Apr. 20
    Died at Derby aged 58 Mr Richard Foulks higgler late of Smalley.
Apr. 30
    The weather last month has been cold and piercing frosty nights with dry cold winds. On the 23rd about 3 o’clock in the afternoon there was a very piercing snow storm which lasted about an hour, the like has not been seen this winter before, but the wind changed on the 28th and it is now fine pleasant weather.
May 3
    Received a letter & music from India.
May 12
    Mr Choulerton & Esther Lee was married at Horsley Church & on the 22nd. Mrs Choulerton took poison by mistake but after swallowing a large dose of mustard she was restored to herself again.
May 23
    Fine growing weather.
May 21
    A severe hurricane passed over this part of the country by which several trees were blown up by the roots. One large elm tree in particular at Linkwood near Stainsby House were blown down to the ground and up by the roots.
May 30
    The Star of Hope Lodge No. 34 of the Albion Order of Odd Fellows M. U. held their anniversary without a procession at Mr R. Turton’s, Woodhouse Hill Top.
May 31
    The Sitwell Lodge of Odd Fellows M. U. held their anniversary with a full procession at Mr A Kerry’s Rose and Crown Smalley Common.
    On the 31 ult. Mr G. Porter Woodhouse Lane to Miss Hannah Potter of Mickleover married at the latter place.

    Married at Morley by the Reverend S. Fox, Mr H. Brown, horse breaker Smalley common to Miss Hannah Eden of Risley. Same day at Horsley Mr R. Else to Miss Hannah Welch.

    Thunder & rain. It was tremendous at Belper & vicinity.
July 1
    Smalley Feast the whole of the week up to the 7th. The weather has been very fine and the hay harvest is just setting in.
July 4
    Died at Smalley Mill, Elizabeth daughter of Mr C. Allen aged 22 years.
July 9
    Sale of houses and land at Smalley Mill in the occupation of Mr Pool of Derby, late the property of Mr Joshua Harrison hosier deceased.
July 14
    Christopher Oldknow of Horsley Woodhouse was convicted before the magistrates at Belper for stealing a pair of boots at Kilbourne and sentenced to six weeks imprisonment with hard labour.
    Died in Wood Lane about 80 years of age Mr F. Eley universally respected.
July 21
    Died in London E. D. Sitwell, Esquire, of Stainsby House aged 82 years & interred in the family vault at Morley on the 28th. He was borne to the grave by his servants viz.,

    Woodhouse wakes began.
July 24
    The Stainsby Lodge of the Ilkeston J. O. O. F. held their third anniversary at the Sitwell Arms Woodhouse Hill Top. The Lodge went in procession to Horsley Church preceded by the Belper Brass Band. Also the Sick Club held at the Jolly Colliers Horsley Woodhouse went to church at the same time preceded by the Ilkeston band. The day was fine and each party returned to their respected hotels to do honour to the good cheer that was provided for them, which it is needless to say they did. The afternoon was spent in a pleasant manner as is usual on such occasions and each member returned home at a seasonable hour pleased & delighted with the days entertainment.
Aug. 4
    Died at the Smithy Houses Denby, Mr Thomas Hogg universally respected by all who knew him. Aged 63 years.
Aug. 12
    Two sermons were preached in the General Baptist Chapel Smalley by the Reverend W. Gray of Ashby de La Zouch. Collections were made in aid of the Sabbath school and £7—8—6 were realised.
Aug. 26
    Mr Richard Foulks of Wood Lane died suddenly aged 83 years.
Sep. 1
    Mr Joel Kerry of London visited his friends at the Sitwell Arms Woodhouse Hill Top and returned to London on the 5th.
Sep. 2
    Mrs Mary Turner of Smalley died aged 50 years.
Sep. 11
    After being thoroughly repaired the church at Horsley was reopened and the Lord Bishop of Litchfield preached an impressive sermon from Psalm 84th & 4 verse. Afterwards the sum of £133—6s. was collected. Divine service being over a collation was served in the school room to all those who were lucky enough to get tickets, about 100 in number, something after the fashion of electioneering. The wealthy and proud were filled with good things but the ill-favoured and poor went empty away.

    Mr W. Redgate of Woodhouse Hill Top died aged 66 years.
Oct. 1
    Died at Smalley, Mr Thomas Carrington baker aged 79 years.
    Sale of household furniture and stocking frames on the premises of the late Mr William Redgate of Woodhouse Hill Top. The sale was brisk and the lumber sundries and furniture fetched high prices but the frames sold very low inasmuch as nine were sold in one lot for £2—14s. Also two others in full work for £1 - and two others for £1—4s.
Oct. 4
    The inhabitants of Smalley Mill were alarmed in consequence of a fire which broke out on the premises of Mr J. Fletcher coke yards. The cart shed was burnt down and but for the assistance of the neighbours whose kind exertions extinguished the flames considerable more damage would have been done.
Oct. 23
    Mr John Turton was severely crushed by the fall of a large stone at Flamstead House, Denby.
Oct. 27
    The annual harvest supper was given by Mr R. Sitwell, Esquire, of Morley to his servants & labourers where music, dancing, singing & good friendship was the order of the evening. (Mr Bates Gamekeeper to the late E. D. Sitwell, Esquire, paid off).
Nov. 3
    Miss E. Sitwell left Stainsby Hall for her new residence Duffield Road Derby.

Dec. 24
    A melancholy gun accident happened to Mr Christopher Pounder at Marehay by which his leg was blown off. He was removed to the Derby Infirmary but died before his wounds could be dressed.
    The workmen employed in the tan yard of Mr H. Richardson of Horsley Woodhouse held their annual supper & ball at Mr J. Pearson’s New Inn at the above place where a pleasant evening was spent.

    Married at Horsley Church by the Reverend Mr Thompson on Tuesday last Jan. 1st Mr James Slack to Miss E. Clark.
Jan. 3
    Died at Smalley, Mary relic of the late Mr Thomas Mee, Greenwich pensioner, aged about 70 years.

    Frost and snow continues.
Jan. 9
    Died at Woodhouse Hill Top in the 62 year of her age Elizabeth wife of Mr Joseph Potter farmer and grazier.
Jan. 13
    Died at Smalley Mill in the 37th year of her age Harriet wife of Mr Henry Fletcher.
Jan. 16
    On the 21st ult. Charles Harries was seriously lamed by the fall of loose earth in a lime stone quarry at Denby and when sufficiently recovered removed to a new house in Dob Hole Lane, his former residence being Wood Lane. January 16th 1861.

Feb. 11
    Isaac Fisher of Horsley Woodhouse alias Warren was brought before the Bench at Smalley for having a bundle of hay in his possession and not giving a satisfactory account how he came by it he was sent to jail for one month. Mr James Porter was brought up on a paltry charge of poaching but the magistrates dismissed the case.

Feb. 18
    Died in the 67 year of his age Mr Nathaniel Warren landlord of the Ship Tavern Nottingham. He was formerly in the service of E.D. Sitwell, Esquire, of Stainsby House Horsley Woodhouse.
Feb. 21
    A shocking accident happened to a young man named Webster at a Ironstone pit at Denby. He was buried alive in the pit and was not got out till 13 days after dead.
Mar. 2
    William Thompson a bricklayers labourer was accidentally drowned at bottle brook.
Mar. 14
    The executors of the late William Redgate summonsed his debtors to the county court for about £22 in all. When after hearing of the various cases His Honour awarded about £14 to be paid by the delinquents in sums of from 4s. to 5s. per month, the remainder being taken of for set offs.

    Died at Smalley Mr Richard Barker aged 30 years.
Mar. 21
    Died at Horsley Woodhouse Mr William Walker quarry man universally respected by all who knew him. Aged 43 years.
    Mr William Holbrook bailiff to the late E.D. Sitwell, Esquire, left Wood Lane.
Mar. 23
    Mr William Fletcher, labourer to the late E.D. Sitwell, Esquire, left the barn after 30 years servitude.
Mar. 25
    Mr James Slack installed in his new office as managing farmer & labourer to the Reverend H. Sitwell of Stainsby House Horsley Woodhouse.

    Joseph Oldknow was killed by accident in a coal pit at Loscoe aged 30 years.
Mar. 26
    A grand concert was held at Horsley in aid of the Widows and Orphans Funds for the Ripley District of Odd Fellows. M. U. Conductor – Mr J. Storer. There was a large assembly on the occasion but we are sorry to add that report says it was a decided failure as there was not so much collected as covered the expenses.
April 16
    Died at Smalley about the 63 year of her age Mrs Sophia Oldknow relict of the late Mr Thomas Oldknow higgler who on the 18th November 1852 died aged 50 years.
May 2
    A frightful tragedy at Ilkeston of a father being shot by his own son.
May 5
    Sarah wife of John Carrington Smalley died aged 46 years.
May 11
    On Saturday May 11th as three men from Horsley Woodhouse were seated in a cart and returning from Derby the horse suddenly swerved to the side of the road and the wheel of the cart came in contact with a stope and the whole were precipitated to the ground with great violence. The two younger Messrs. Weston & Booth escaped with some severe cuts and bruises but Mr Joseph Crooks an elderly man was removed to the Derby Infirmary, his wounds being of such a nature that he died in a few days after.
May 16
    Mr William Bates removed with his family from Wood Lane to Ruddington Nottinghamshire to be gamekeeper to C. Patchet, Esquire, M.P. for Nottingham.
May 18
    Millicent daughter of William Fletcher of Smalley Mill died aged 19 years.
May 20
    Whit Monday weather fine. Woodhouse Old Sick Club marched in procession to Stainsby Hall and Mr J. Potters Horsley Woodhouse Hill Top preceded by the Belper Brass Band.
    Married Mr Edward Woollands of Smalley Common to Mrs Appleby of Morley Moor at St Alkmunds Church Derby.
June 3
    Married at Horsley Church by the Reverend G. Thompson, Curate, Mr John Allen of Smalley Mill to Miss Martha Pearson daughter of Mr J. Pearson of the New Inn Horsley Woodhouse.
June 15
    Died at Smalley William Radford, Esquire, Lieutenant of H. M. R. N. aged 80 years.
June 17
    William Beeston of Smalley framework knitter entered a charge of stealing £14—10—0 against a young man who lodged at his house, a mason by trade. When after keeping him in Smalley Lockup a week he was discharged for want of evidence much to the satisfaction of the neighbourhood.
June 26 & 27
    A sumptuous banquet was given to the scholars of Woodhouse on the 26 by the Reverend H. W. Sitwell at Stainsby in a large tent erected for the purpose and on the 27 the scholars of Horsley & Smalley were entertained in the same benevolent manner. After the feast each day they enjoyed themselves in gymnastics sports till sun down when all went home highly pleased with the days sport & entertainment.
July 1
    Smalley feast and fine hay weather.
July 11
    Died at Derby Sarah wife of Mr W. Holbrook late bailiff of Sandywells Farm Wood Lane.
    Samuel Noon of Horsley Woodhouse was charged before the magistrates at Smalley with setting fire to the house of Mr Joseph Bardill but was discharged for want of evidence.
July 21
    Woodhouse feast. The clubs held at the different public houses kept their anniversaries as usual and was well attended otherwise the feast was slack.
July 29 to Aug. 2
    Fine hay weather.
Aug. 3
    Mr Wittaker of Ferriby Brook & Mr H. Booth inspected the cottage gardens at Smalley for the purpose of awarding the prizes to the industrious competitors. When the 1st prize of 15s. was awarded to Mr J. Booth, postmaster Smalley, 2nd prize of 10s. to Mr J. Turton, publican, & 3rd prize to Mr J. Carrington, grocer. This decision has caused great murmuring among the inhabitants.
Aug. 10
    Joel Kerry of London visited his friends at the Hill Top and returned on the 19th.

Aug. 11
    Two sermons were preached in the Baptist Chapel Smalley by the Rev. J. Dale of Marlpool for the benefit of the Sabbath school. The collections amounted to £6—8s—3½d.
Aug. 14
    Mr R. Morris the new gamekeeper to the Reverend H. W. Sitwell of Stainsby arrived from Surrey and took up his abode at Mr J. Slack’s, Wood Lane.
Aug. 16
    This day the execution of Smith for the murder of his father on the 2nd of May last took place at Derby. This another melancholy page will be added to annals of crime to be read by future generations.
Aug. 19
    Three poachers were taken on the estate of R. Sitwell, Esquire, of Morley and sent to Derby for trials.
    A. Walker framework knitter was brought before J. Radford, Esquire, Smalley and fined 6d. 1 farthing damages and 10s./6d. costs for pulling a turnip and eating it in a field belonging to Mr H. Richardson of Horsley Woodhouse.
Aug. 23
    Elijah Carline engaged with a company to lay pipes for waterworks at St Petersburg and sailed for that place from Hull on the 3rd of May last but returned at the above date to Smalley through ill health.
Aug. 29
    G. Oldknow of Horsley Woodhouse was taken before the magistrates of Smalley on a paltry charge of dog stealing and fined £1 and £1—1s—6d costs or 6 weeks hard labour.
Aug. 30
    J. Oldknow of Horsley Woodhouse was convicted before the Mayor of Derby for stealing a great coat from one shop & a carpet bag from another in Derby. 3 months imprisonment.
Aug. 31
    Mary wife of Mr Thomas Woolley died aged about 58 years.
Sep. 9
    Carleton Thompson fined once more for being drunk & disorderly.
Oct. 18
    The harvest supper at R. Sitwell’s, Esquire, Morley. The greatest harmony prevailed.
Nov. 3
    A soldier belonging to the Queen’s Life Guards preached at the Ranter’s Chapel Horsley Woodhouse.
Nov. 5
    R. Fletcher left Hill Top to be gardener to Miss E. Sitwell Kedleston Road Derby.
Nov. 11
    Died in London, R. S. Sitwell, Esquire, formerly Major of the 3rd Dragon Guards and was interred in the family vault Morley Church on the 16th aged 74 years. He was borne to his last resting place by 6 of his brother’s servants (viz.) Joseph Bailey, William Hinds, Peter Hunt, John Woollands, William Carrington, Jas. Slack.
Nov. 18
    Died Suddenly at Denby, Mr R. Spray at an advanced age.
    Married on the 18th of November last at St James Piccadilly London – R. J. Sitwell, Esquire, to Miss Senior second daughter of J. Senior, Esquire, of Brooklands Birkenhead.
Nov. 25
    Died at Belper Union, Mr J. Reynolds and was buried at Smalley on the 28 aged 69 years.
Nov. 26
    Married at Morley by the Reverend S. Fox, Mr J. Ratcliffe to Miss Hannah daughter of Mr J. Woolley, West Hallam.

    Died at Duffield, Miss E. Radford aged 76 years. Buried at Smalley.
Jan. 4
    Died at Smalley, Mr H. Richardson aged 72 years.
Jan. 6
    Mr R. Morris seized Peter Redgate’s gun.
Jan. 13
    George Horsley fined 10s. & 10—6 expenses for killing a goldfinch with P. Redgate’s gun.
    J. Cole. drummer of the 37 Regiment retired to Devonport after a month’s furlough.

Feb. 6
    The 21st birthday of Mr S. Turton of the Sitwell Arms Hill Top. A select party of friends and acquaintances were invited to tea supper and ball and a very pleasant evening was spent.
Mar. 10
    John Fisher, Vincent Horsley, & Robert Ratcliffe was summonsed before the Bench at Smalley for poaching. Fisher 3 months the others 2 days hard labour.

    Mrs Powell died at Derby aged about 90 years.

    Died at Horsley Woodhouse in the 63 year of his age Thomas Henderson late a journeyman stockinger. Like Tom Topsail of old and a great many more, he’d but few friends to help him because he was poor.
Apr. 4
    Married at the Register Office Belper Mr John Carrington of Smalley to Miss Millicent Fletcher she being the sister of his deceased wife and daughter of Mr Stephen Fletcher gardener to the Reverend H. W. Sitwell of Stainsby Hall Horsley Woodhouse.
Apr. 11
    The execution of R. Thorley at Derby for the murder of his sweetheart Eliza Morrow.
Apr. 28
    Samuel Noon of Horsley Woodhouse was convicted of using threatening language with a knife in his hand to Mrs Holding. Three Months for want of bail.
May 6
    Married at Morley Mr B. Smith to Miss H. Saxton both of Smalley.

    Alfred Taylor sent to jail.
June 3
    Mr Samuel Turton left Hill Top for London as an emigrant to New Zealand and on the 14th embarked and set sail on board the Bombay sailing vessel together with three other young men as companions from the vicinity of Smalley. Mr Robert Turton who went to see his son properly cared for and safe on board returned to the Hill Top on the 16th.
June 11
    The star of Hope No. 34 Lodge of A. O. O. F. held their anniversary at the Sitwell Arms June 11th 1862.
June 30
    J. Fisher, R. Ratcliffe, & a man named Glew was convicted of poaching.
July 22
    Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse Wakes.
    The Stainsby Lodge of the Ilkeston O. O. F. held their anniversary at the Sitwell Arms Woodhouse Hill Top where an excellent dinner was provided by Mr & Mrs Turton and ample justice were done to it by the respected members. After the cloth was drawn the chair was taken by R Boden, Esquire, M. D. and the vice chair by the Reverend T. Oldknow. The usual loyal & patriotic toasts were given which were cheerfully drunk by the company. The chairman then gave the health of Mr. J Oldknow a visiting friend. Mr O. returned thanks for the handsome manner in which his health had being drunk and in a very clever speech dwelt on the merits of odd fellowship earnestly recommending all in the time of health to provide for the hour of need. The worthy gentleman was frequently cheered during this eloquent address which we hope will not be lost by those who heard it. He also dwelt very forcibly on the use and abuse of anniversaries. Also how that by organization of different lodges a deal of expense might be saved, and larger numbers in a good work collected together his remarks in this respect were very interesting and humorous. The speaker finally sat down amidst repeated cheers. Several other toasts were given and responded to so that the evening was spent in a very agreeable manner and all returned home at a seasonable hour.
July 23
    The Female Friendly Society held at the Sitwell Arms their annual tea drinking and ball which was well attended and went off in its usual spirited manner. Weather very fine.
Aug. 3
    Two sermons were preached in the Baptist Chapel Smalley in aid of the Sunday school of that place and £6—4—6 were collected.
Aug. 5
    Married at Cotmanhay by the Hon. and Reverend F. Curzon M A., Vicar of Mickleover uncle of the bride, the Hon G. J. Addington, Major 38 Foot son of Viscount Sidmouth to Nelly Hindmarsh second daughter of A. M Mundy, Esquire, Shipley Hall.
Aug. 8
    Mr R. Turton Hill Top received a Swansea ship Letter from his son on board the Bombay emigrant ship bound for New Zealand dated July 2nd ‘62. This letter which is wrote in a very lively strain descriptive of the emigrant’s life on board ship will be read with interest by all who peruse it.
Aug. 9
    At Linkwood Horsley Woodhouse, Millicent wife of Mr J. Carrington gave birth to twins, two fine girls, and we are happy to add that the mother & children are both doing well.
Aug. 17
    Died at Smalley Mill, Martha wife of Mr J. Cooper of Milford and daughter of Mr E. Allen of the former place aged 26 years.
Aug. 19
    Died at Smalley Mill Mr Thomas Fletcher shoe maker aged 68 years.
Aug. 24
    Died on the 24 at Golden Valley Horsley Woodhouse, Mrs Elizabeth Mitchel at an advanced age.
Aug. 25
    Died in Wood Lane, Mr Job Clark aged 58 years.
Sep 1
    Mr G. Burgoyne of Horsley Woodhouse was convicted before the Bench at Smalley for pursuing game. Ordered to pay £1 fine costs 10s/6d.

    Died at Smalley, Dorothy wife of Mr John Woolley aged 67 years universally respected.

    Loud thunder & rain at midnight in Derbyshire & Lancashire.
Oct. 25
    Harvest supper at Morley Hall. R. J. Sitwell, Esquire’s labours & domestics spent a pleasant evening in singing & dancing. The company separated at ¾ past 11 o’clock.
Nov. 21
    Mr R. Turton received a letter from his son in New Zealand who went out with the Bombay emigrant ship from London on the 14th June & landed in New Zealand on 9th Sept. after a passage of 84 days.
Dec. 3
    Died in Woodhouse Lane, Mrs Hannah Hinds aged 44 years.
Dec. 21
    Thirza wife of Lawrence Grace was delivered of three children at Holbrook.

    Died at Smalley, Mr Daniel Smith farmer aged 94 Years.
Jan. 6
    William Wibberly was convicted at sessions for obtaining money in his master name (Mr W. Heath of Smalley Mill) and appropriating it to his own use. 18 month’s hard labour.
Jan. 11
    Died at Newark upon Trent, Mr Joseph Roe late of Smalley Mill aged 46 universally respected.
Feb. 19
    Married at Horsley, Mr G. S. Walters to Miss Sophia daughter of Mr J. Middleton, Gentleman.
Feb. 21
    Mr E. Woollands went to Belper and got rather fresh. He also got robbed and put in lock up but was discharged without expense next morning.
Mar. 10
    Rejoicing at Smalley on the marriage of the Prince & Princess of Wales which gave great satisfaction to all parties.
Apr. 7
    Died at Horsley Woodhouse aged 58 years William Lounds alias Money Charley.
Apr. 9
    Died at Morley, Mr Thomas Allsop aged 84 years.

    Lodge No. 34 held their anniversary at the Sitwell Arms Horsley Woodhouse. The procession headed by the Codnor Brass Band repaired to Smalley Church where an impressive sermon was preached by the Reverend Mr Malin. After the cloth was drawn Mr R. Boden surgeon was called to the chair and Mr Allport to the vice chair. The day was beautifully fine and a pleasant afternoon was spent.

    Harriet Weston, Bell Inn Smalley, was informed on for having her house open for the sale of liquor on the 9th June by P. C. Lund. The case was dismissed, the informer having failed to prove it to the satisfaction of the bench and much to the gratification of public at large. George Barker, Smalley Common, was informed on by P. C. Lund for allowing his cow to graze by the high road side while taking it to water. Case dismissed - to be more careful in future.

    No. 34 Lodge of the A. O. O. F. held their 21st anniversary at the house of Mrs Turton Sitwell Arms Hill Top Horsley Woodhouse. A good dinner was provided which gave great satisfaction and whole proceedings gave content to all parties concerned.

    Died at Heanor (city) Edward Musson father of Mr. Musson, Wood Lane aged 66.
    Thomas Howe framework knitter Dob Hole Lane started to Derby to buy him a coat. The coat was bought and brought home by a companion. The companion and Howe separated in Derby and he was heard no more of till the 3rd of April when he was found dead in a horse pond at Litchurch near Derby. His remains were brought to Horsley Woodhouse and buried at Horsley on the 5th, aged 47 years.
