    Died suddenly at Woodend Heanor, Mr James Inger aged upwards of 76 years Jan 21st.

    Died suddenly at Smalley Green, Louisa wife of Mr Hudson aged 32 years Jan 18th.

    Married at Horsley Church Jan. 29 1870 Mr Ratcliffe late of Derby to Miss Ann daughter of Mr William Weston, Jolly Colliers Horsley Woodhouse.

    Died suddenly at Heanor, Mr Robert Marshall late publican & hosier.

    Died at Heanor Common Side, Mr J. Brough aged 64 years.
    Died suddenly at Horsley, Mrs Walsh aged upwards of seventy years.

    Died at Denby, Mr Ralph Ogden many years constable & overseer of that place. Universally respected by all who knew him. Aged 75 years.

    Francis Ottewell in a squabble with J. Brown alias Knaskey fell and broke his leg.

    Sally wife of Mr Thomas Roe of Wood Lane was confined of a fine son. Joseph Roe his name.

    Sarah the beloved wife of Mr J. Housley of Smalley died aged 53 years.

    Martha wife of Edward Dickman of Smalley gave birth to a son. Robert by name.
May 14
    William Ratcliffe of Smalley died aged 64 years.
    Ann Wife of Charles Harris of Wood Lane gave birth to a daughter.
May 16
    George Roe and Frank Hunt went to Derby on a bit of a spree and got into an Irish row. The police came and George became quiet unmanageable but with a deal of ado they took him before the Mayor of Derby and he gave George 24 hours imprisonment so they took what money he had left, gave him the county crop, and he came home to Smalley Mill as quiet as a lamb and says O what a fool I have been.

    Robert Annable of Horsley, French horn player, died aged upwards of 80 years.
June 13
    Died at Little Eaton, Dinah wife of Mr John Porter late of Wood Lane aged 82 years.
June 15
    Martha wife of Fredrick Foulks of Smalley gave birth to a daughter. Deborah by name.

Aug. 23
    Married at Smalley, M. Hudson to Harriet youngest daughter of Mr Richard Kerry blacksmith Smalley Common.
Sep. 3
    Died suddenly the Reverend S. Fox, Rector of Morley & Vicar of Horsley. He was taken ill at the Union Belper, was conveyed home to the Rectory at Morley, and died soon after he got there. He was buried on the 8th and borne to the earth by John Hinds, Peter Hunt, Joseph Loxley, John Annable, Henry Smith, John Roone.

    Died at Smalley, Mr Thomas Kyte farmer 84.
Feb. 10
    Elizabeth Daniels of Horsley Woodhouse died on the 10 of Feb. and was buried on the 14 aged 26 years. The members of the Hill Top F. F. S. attended the funeral.
Feb. 21

    Died at Smalley, Catharine wife of William Foulks aged 60 years.

    Francis Wain once a sort of to do well farmer in the parish of Mapperley died at Stanley Common in the midst of poverty aged 80 years.

    Joseph son of Robert Moss enlisted in Foot Guards at Derby and on the 5th Dec. was fully enrolled in the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, Warley Barracks, Essex.

    Lucy Turner’s son born, name Benjamin, Dec 17 1871.

    Thomas Watson, Loscoe, Gentleman, died Dec. 21 aged 70 years.

    John Benniston, Heanor Common Side died Dec. 23rd 1871 aged 86 years.

    Edward Woodward, Horsley Park died aged 78 years.

    At an advanced age Mrs Ellen Housley relict of the late Mr W. Housley farmer of Smalley.
Feb. 10
    Mrs Harriet Turton, Sitwell Arms Hill Top died aged 67 year universally respected. Her end was peace.
Feb. 13
    John Potter, Smalley Mill, was killed by falling into a coal pit at the Cotgraves in the parish of Mapperley aged 48 years.
Feb. 16
    Mr Philip Walker, Gentleman, farmer of Shipley died aged 67 years.
Feb. 19
    Matthew Musson’s wife ran away from home Feb 19; returned with penitence from the far off land of Monkey Town near Loscoe on the 4th March after an absence of 14 days and was received joyfully by her forgiving husband.
Feb. 27
    Mr Joseph Potter, Gentleman, farmer late of Hill Top Horsley Woodhouse died at Stanley Hall in the 72 year of his age.
Apr. 5
    Died at Derby aged 80 years Mr Joseph Morley many years butler to the late J. Radford, Esquire, of Smalley Hall. His remains were removed to Smalley to be laid near his wife whom he had married some years since, she being the 3rd daughter of the late Mr Stephen Foulks of Smalley and her name was Elizabeth, who died about 10 years after marriage, leaving no issue. Mr Morley has since his wife’s death being at lodgings amongst his wife’s relations. The funeral took place on Monday April 8th. He was conveyed in a hearse to Smalley Church gate and borne to the earth by four of the village choir, viz. Mr S. Kerry, organist, Messrs. S. Turton, G. Allen & F. Walters, vocalists.

    Died at Heanor Mr Joseph Heath landlord of the Red Lion Inn aged 70. Also Mr Manfoull aged 66 years. Also Mr George Abbott late of the Puss in Boots public house, Windley, aged upwards of 70. Universally respected.

    Mr George Smith lost his life by a gun accident at Kilbourne aged about 50 years.
June 1
    Sally wife of T. Roe gave birth to a daughter Mary by name both doing well.
June 5
    J. Day, Wood Lane sent to jail for 10 days for debt owing to S. Poller.
June 26
    Ann wife of C. Harries gave birth to a son Frank his name.
June 28
    Martha wife of Fredrick Foulks gave birth to a son Matthew his name.

Aug. 18
    The annual sermons of the Baptist School Smalley. £8—2s—6d collected.
    The foot and mouth disease amongst the horned cattle has been very prevalent lately in the vicinity of Smalley, Mr S. Kerry farmer Smalley Common having lost three valuable cows from the effects of it.
Sep. 15
    The Reverend C. Kerry preached at Smalley Church to an attentive and respectable audience from the 2nd chapter of Ephesians 19 and 3 following verses.
Sep. 17
    Elizabeth wife of M. Musson left her home the second time.
    As Mr Richard Musson of Smalley Common was returning home from Heanor he was seized with paralysis from the effects of which we are sorry to say he is not yet recovered, although much better than when he was first attacked.

    The Reverend Mr Middleton, Curate, preached at Smalley Church from 28 Chapter of Isaiah 16 verse and very good it being the counterpart to Mr C. Kerry’s beautiful sermon of the Sunday before.

    Joseph son of Job Clark entered service as groom footman and man of all work to Reverend Mr Middleton, Curate, Smalley.

    Frank son of C. & A. Harries & Mary daughter of T. & S. Roe was baptised at Horsley Church by the Vicar Reverend G. Thompson.

    Joseph Middleton, Gentleman, of Horsley died aged about 60 years.

    Miss Walker daughter of the late Mr Philip Walker farmer of Shipley died aged 23.
Dec. 17
    Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales honoured Derby with a visit on route to Chatsworth House the Palace of the Peak. Grand fireworks and rejoicing at Derby on the grand occasion.

1873

Jan. 26
    George Stephenson silk framework knitter Smalley went to Woodhouse on a drinking spree and in going home was robbed he said of about 18s/0d. The next day he went to look after it and got into the company of the party he thought robbed him at the New Inn Horsley Woodhouse. It was getting late at night; some angry words came up and he was brutally ill-treated but managed to get home and died in a few days after from the injury he received. A jury was called at the Bell Inn, Smalley, which sat two days and dismissed the case with a verdict of manslaughter. Some of the parties that was in the house have been arrested but still at liberty for want of evidence. One young fellow it is thought the principle has absconded and is still at large.

    William Webster coachman to R. Sitwell, Esquire, of Morley Hall aged 26 years was accidently killed by a furious horse.

    Henry Cheetham hung himself while in a fit of temporary derangement at Smalley aged 55 years.

    Died at Stanley Common, Mr William Lambert aged 70 & upwards.
Dec. 25
    Mr Hudson of Smalley Common having begun Christmas rather merrily went home where his mirth turned into something like madness for he disagreed with his wife who made her exit. He then locked the door and began to amuse himself by breaking the furniture some of it being very valuable and had it not been for the timely arrival of his two brothers-in-law there is no knowing what else he might have done.
    Died at Tag Hill on Christmas Day last Mary wife of Mr Richard Howitt after a few days Illness. Aged about 63.

Jan. 20
    Married at Morley, Mr John Turton to Miss Louisa Taylor both of Smalley.

    Married at Belper, Mr William Musson to Miss Ann Booth both of Horsley Woodhouse.

    Died suddenly at the Jolly Colliers Tag Hill, Mr J. Stainsby silk stockinger aged 72 years.

    Died at Horsley April 5 Mr Benjamin Staples landlord of the Coach & Horses public house aged 50.
Apr. 9
    Died at Smalley Mill, Hannah wife of J. Potter bull carrier aged 70.
Apr. 15
    Died at Smalley, Deborah wife of Michael Foulks aged 63 years. Also Michael Foulks husband of the above Deborah Foulks was taken ill of bronchitis the day after his wife’s death and died on the 20th much lamented and respected by his friends and neighbours. He was a member of the Star of Hope No. 34 Lodge of the A. O. O. F. A number of the brotherhood attended the funeral and his remains were quietly interred in the same grave with his wife in Smalley Baptist Chapel Yard aged 71 years.
Apr. 26
    Mr J. Day of Wood Lane formerly the owner of Cocker House near Eastwood in a bit of a spree with his wife in disagreement so for a little revenge he set to and broke the sofa up into splinters. Mrs Day summonsed him to appear before the Bench at Heanor but John refused to appear. The case was tried and he went to jail a month.

    Mrs Mundy wife of A.M. Mundy, Esquire, of Shipley died May 8 aged 60 years.
May 11
    W. Allen junior, blacksmith Tag Hill turned crazy May 11th.
May 17
    J. Oxley coachman to R. J. Sitwell, Esquire, died at the Lodge in Wood Lane aged about 40 years.
May 19
    Fanny wife of Joseph Clark of Wood Lane gave birth to a daughter and they called her name Sally.
    Charles Coulston died suddenly at Ilkeston aged 64 years.
May 21
    Susannah wife of S. Room died at Woodhouse aged about 37 years.

    The anniversary of No. 34 Lodge A. O. O. F. Also the Sitwell Lodge of the M. U. held at the Rose and Crown. Both met at Smalley Church and an excellent sermon was preached by the Rector Reverend A. Wilmot.

    Died, Mary widow of the late Mr S. Roe of Smalley aged 75.

    Married at Morley, Jonathon Kemp to Millicent daughter of Mr Robert Fletcher.
Nov. 25
    Died of old age and infirmities Mr Abraham Abbott aged 82. Also Mr George Barks pensioner sergeant of the 9th foot aged 85. He was a member of the Nottingham Imperial Order of Odd Fellows at Tag Hill - a great number of the members attended the funeral.
Dec. 4
    Died at Smalley Dec. 4 Mr William Carrington in the 54 year of his age. He was parish clerk and gardener to R. S. Sitwell, Esquire, and died after a few days illness, much lamented.
Dec. 21
    Elizabeth wife of M. Musson, Wood Lane, left her home for the 3rd time.
    Opening of the stocking manufactory belonging to Messrs. I. & R. Morley, Heanor.

Jan. 11
    Joseph Moss private 3 Battalion of Grenadier Guards started from Smalley to Dublin after a furlough of 6 weeks.
Jan. 20
    Died at the Rose & Crown Inn Smalley Common, Ann the beloved wife of Mr Anthony Kerry aged about 56 years.
Jan. 24
    Died at Quarndon near Derby the Hon. Mrs Jarvis daughter of R. S. Sitwell, Esquire, of Morley and was buried in the family vault at that place aged about 47 years.
    Died at Horsley, Mary wife of Mr William Walters aged 58 years.
Feb. 4
    The clergyman and gentlemen of Smalley contributed a purse of gold and presented it to Mr J. Allport as a small token of their respect for the manner in which he has laboured as choir master of the village church for upwards of 25 years.
Feb. 7
    Died at Horsley Woodhouse, Manney Riley aged about 60 years.

    Mary widow of Thomas Redgate late of Smalley drowned herself in a fit of insanity in pool of water near Tag Hill aged 75 years.

    Died at Horsley, Mr W. Walters wheelwright aged 62 years.

    Died at Loscoe, Mr Joseph Caley aged 93 years. He had buried six wives and had maintained his home by coal higgling with a pony and cart and was thought to be very poor but after his death a search was made and various sums of money was found secreted about the bed on which he lay and different parts of the house to the amount rumour says of £300.

    As Mrs Hart of Smalley Mill was going about her business on the road between Smalley Mill and the Rose and Crown she was attacked by a savage dog and bit in a fearful manner. The brute then left her and went and attacked some sheep belonging to Mr S. Kerry farmer and worried one so bad that it died in a few days after. It then took up the road through Smalley and attacked some boys going home from school and bit one severely. The brute also worried more sheep and a goose near Shipley and whether his depredations ended there or not we are not able to tell as we have heard no more about it.

    A serious accident happened at Simonfield Colliery by which one man James Parkin was killed leaving a wife and family, and another had his leg broken.

    Whitsun Tuesday a sad accident happened to a man with a load of wood belonging to D. Lowe, Esquire, near Horsley Woodhouse. He was Killed dead on the spot.

    On Whitsun Wednesday Mrs Porter of Wood Lane took a trip to Liverpool accompanied by her esteemed friend Mr J. Smith of Stanley Common widower and after visiting some of the principle places of attraction in that vast emporium he conducted her safe back to her home on the Saturday night following at half past eight o’clock.

    The wife of Mr Allsop, Stainsby farm bailiff gave birth to a son but it died in a few hours.

    Mrs Margaret Stafford died at Smalley aged 66 years.

    Mr Isaac Beresford of Smalley Mill had a child died of scarlet fever and in a few days after he had another die of the same complaint.
July 8
    Mrs Betty Woollands died at Smalley aged 91 years.

    Tea drinking at Smalley Hall for the school children and drum and fife band. Same day Sarah Jane Fletcher of Smalley had a son born.

    Mr William Roe joiner late of the Nags Head Tag Hill died at Derby and was buried in Smalley Baptist Chapel Yard aged 66 years.

    John Henderson silk stockinger Smalley died aged 75.
    Charley Woolley a promising well conducted young man aged 23 was accidentally killed in a coal pit at Simon Hill in the parish of Mapperley. He was a member of No. 34 Lodge of the A. O. O. F. and a number of the members attended the funeral. He was well respected and much lamented by all who knew him and he has left a wife and two small children to mourn his loss.
July 9
    Isaac Abbott a Leicestershire man had been living at Smalley several years had been poorly some time. He went to somewhere near Leicester & died July 9 aged 74.
July 18

    Catherine wife of William Carrington of Smalley gave birth to daughter the child is doing well but the mother’s life is despaired of. Died 13 of August aged 27 years.

    Frances Louisa wife of William Holbrook gave birth to a daughter at Smalley. Both doing well.
Aug. 15
    Mr S. Turton of Smalley was shot with ginger bottle, the cork flying out accidentally which nearly proved fatal at Heanor Flower Show.

    1852 Joseph Moss son of Robert & Mary Moss born, and was shot in Derby Town Hall July 12 and died 13 aged 26 years.1

Joseph Moss (1801-1881) was my great-great-great-great-grandfather.

1 Joseph’s grandson Joseph Moss was born in July 1851 and was 27 years old when he died. Newspapers reporting the circumstances of his death at the time also incorrectly gave his age as 26.
